Millican’s Cave

North Western Area OS Map OL4

Start from the car park in Rosthwaite village where there is also a tea shop. Using the stepping stones or the footbridge, cross the River Derwent and walk north along it. Go up through the woods, after which you will have to hunt out the track to the quarries. Keep a look-out on the left for a cave near the path.

50 metres after the cave, you will find a narrow path on your left that climbs steeply behind the cave to a band of rock, keep scrambling up the spoil heap and you will see Millican’s cave ahead. This was the one-time home of Millican Dalton, the self-styled ‘professor of adventure’.

Millican felt so at home in this environment that he didn’t feel the need to retreat to somewhere more comfortable. Come back down to the path and continue northwards and then back up to Castle Crag if you like, or else retrace your steps back to the village.

Speaking about society around him, Millican Dalton once said: ‘we dress too much, we eat too much, almost everything we do is too much…’ Do you agree with him?
Christians believe that God wants to bless us with good things just like a loving father, but we are warned against putting too much emphasis on possessions ‘for we brought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out of it’.
Do you think you’ve got the balance right in your life?
